Reader’s Question:

My boyfriend has a DUI conviction in 2007. Because of that he needs SR22 insurance requirements in Wyoming. How long does he need to have SR22 insurance? I just wanna make sure that he still needs it because if not then I guess there’s no reason for him to keep that. Thanks so much in advance!

I’ve checked this information with the Wyoming Department of Transportation. And what I’ve learned is that SR22 insurance requirements in Wyoming need to be maintained for a period of three (3) years. That would be three years from the date it was required. Since you were not able to specifically mention the date that it was originally required on your boyfriend’s part, I’m guessing it would be one more year, since it was just required in 2007.

SR22 insurance requirements in Wyoming are needed for certain violations like a DUI conviction. This is stated in Wyoming Statute 31-9-401, which requires a proof of financial responsibility for certain violations. SR22 insurance is an insurance certificate which will be filed by an auto insurance company to the Wyoming state department.

Your boyfriend needs to be sure that there won’t be a cancellation on his SR22 insurance. Because once there is, his car insurance company must notify the state department about the status of his SR22 insurance policy. If he has a probationary driver’s license then he needs SR22 insurance to keep his vehicle registration. If the SR22 insurance is not on file with the state department, then his driving privileges will remain suspended.
