Reader’s Question:

I had been in a car accident here in Wyoming where no one was injured although my car was damaged. How soon should I file the claim to my car insurance provider?

Generally, filing a claim with your car insurance provider should be done as soon as possible. This is to speed up the process since your insurer will act as your representative in this matter. The sooner you file the claim, the sooner your car insurance provider will repay you for injuries and/or damages.

Car insurance companies in different states have different laws and policies regarding the time limit of claims filing. Here in Wyoming, the statute of limitations is one year. So, if the car accident was less than a year ago, you are still eligible to file the claim. If you have filed the claim, you should be prepared to receive a call from the other party’s car insurance provider. This usually happens if there is a dispute from the other party. Their insurer will call you to ask your version of the incident. If this ever happens, make sure to document the call. Note everything you say, take the customer representative’s name, and the date and time of the call.

Lastly, since you mentioned that your car sustained damage, you will get a call from your insurer if your claim was approved. They would usually send out an insurance adjuster to assess the damage. Your insurer may also ask you to send your car to a pre-approved shop for damage assessment. Your car insurance will cover for the repair up to the limit of your coverage.
