Reader’s Question:

I am a retired teacher living in Cheyenne, Wyoming. I’m just wondering why the automobile insurance I got is a bit higher than the one I had last year. Is it because of my new car or is it because of my age?

If your car insurance cost more this year than it did last year, it is more likely that it is because of your brand-new car and not because of your age. For one, a brand-new car would require a higher insurance premium than an older make and model for the simple reason that it is more expensive. Then, while the general notion is that the elderly driver poses a higher risk than the younger counterpart, the opposite is actually more the case because, in truth, they are the more seasoned drivers, and they drive more conscientiously–and slowly at that–than the young daredevils. And I think that it is for this reason that almost all the states dictate that car insurance companies offer senior citizens discounted rates that range from 5% to 15% on their premiums. To avail of this offering, you must enroll in eight-day refresher courses for defensive driving sponsored by the AAA or local agencies in Cheyenne, Wyoming. There are additional discount options for senior citizens who are retired and without full-time employment and those who consume minimal driving mileage. Consult your car insurance agent to see how you could take advantage of these add-on benefits.
